Another southeast Manitoban athlete makes the community proud as she heads off to compete in the World’s Championships.
Steinbach resident and local relator, Jacqui Broesky says that powerlifting is not the same as what you see in the Olympics and shares the difference.
“Powerlifting is based on three lifts we do back squat, bench press, and deadlift, you get 3 attempts at each of those 3 lifts, and then at the end you get a total of however much weight you lifted.”
Broesky shows the community that it’s never too late to pursue a dream and accomplish great things as she just turned 49 years old.
“I started lifting in 2019, started competing in 2022. I wanted to start competing earlier but COVID, so, it wasn’t a great time to start in the middle of a pandemic. But yeah, I started competing in 2022 and I realized that maybe I was good at this.”
She shares that going to Worlds was the end goal, but she thought it would take many more years to get there.
“It’s lots of competitions. Hitting standards to get to Provincials, to get to Westerns. And then Westerns to Nationals and then hitting that National total to get to Worlds. There are different standards that you have to hit.”
Broesky’s total at Westerns in March qualified her for Worlds, which was a huge accomplishment.
She explains that she will be competing in two competitions, World’s and the Commonwealth Powerlifting Games in South Africa.
“Commonwealth normally is only every two years. It was supposed to be two weeks after Worlds, but now, my understanding is there were low sign-ups because you can’t have high-level athletes competing at Worlds giving their all on the platform and two weeks later turn around and do another big one. So anyway, they combine them.”
She continues, “I lift one time, and it counts for both competitions. So, it’s kind of a two for one which is unusual but really cool.”
Broesky will train four days a week, for around two hours each session, and sometimes longer.
“Everything with training goes in waves, so leading up to a big competition like this, now I’m in prep and in this peak phase, everything is really heavy and we’re just trying to push those numbers a little bit without maxing out. And then after I come back, we’ll go right back into a deload, not start at the bottom, but give your body a break, change up the exercises that you do so that your body gets rid of the stress that it carries. There’s all kinds of phases that we go through with training.”
Heading into the competitions, she shares that she is unsure of how it will go or where she will be.
“My ranking right now, I’m kind of in the middle of the pack sure so there’s a possibility that I might medal, but everybody is coming there and bringing their best. Really my goal is to hit some new personal records and just do the best I can. I mean it’s an amazing experience.”
Broesky will leave on October 2, and the community will be cheering her on!
