David Knox came to our mind as Graham Rowntree descended from the coaches’ eyrie to survey Saturday’s unfolding first-half crisis that, unfortunately, coincided with the all-too-premature settling of this latest Irish internecine squabble.
Knox, for those beyond rugby’s borders, was a typically shy and retiring Australian who was briefly Michael Cheika’s assistant in the days when there was only one team dominant in the sport here.
