Cross section through Earth showing the mantle. Credit: USGS In 2005, I was navigating winding roads through the Drakensberg Mountains, in Lesotho, Southern Africa. Towering cliff-like features known as escarpments interrupt the landscape, rising up by a kilometer or more. Taken aback by the dramatic scenery, I was struck by a question: how on Earth did it form? The outer shell of our planet is fractured into seven or eight major sections, or tectonic plates, on which the continents sit. We expect to see the continents rise up at the active boundaries of these plates, where volcanism and earthquakes are…
An international group of astronomers has joined efforts seeking to establish a separate time zone for the moon. The French-based International Astronomical Union (IAU) recently approved a resolution on the matter during the group’s General Assembly meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. The resolution calls on space organizations around the world to cooperate on establishing a standard clock for the moon. The moon’s orbital movements around Earth make one day on the lunar surface equal to 29.5 Earth days. And because the moon has less gravity compared to Earth, time moves slightly faster there, about 58.7 microseconds quicker each day.…

The Cornell-developed “PhytoPatholoBot” detects spectral signatures of three kinds of devastating grape diseases – powdery mildew, downy mildew and grapevine leafroll virus – leading to early management of pathogens without needing farmworkers to spot them. Ultimately, data collected by such robots will help to ground-truth NASA satellite data that could one day detect plant diseases from space. This was one of many research projects presented at a technology demonstration on Aug. 20, part of a three-day “Space for Ag Tour” by NASA leaders to better understand the remote sensing needs of Cornell AgriTech researchers, specialty crop growers and local stakeholders.…
‘Dustborn’ needs patience and an open mind, but if you don’t have either, what’s the point in trying … [+] a new game?Red Thread Games Dustborn is among the most unrepentantly liberal and left-leaning games out there. If you’ve spent 20 seconds glancing at YouTube comments or social media, you’ll probably already know this–hundreds of people disavowed it without even playing it. Such is 2024, and once again, it’s a shame–there’s a lot to like in this odd escapade. On a fundamental level, Dustborn has refined and nearly perfected the classic Telltale Games episodic graphic adventure formula, admittedly ten years…
Net.Attack(), a top-down action roguelite, debuted this week at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne, Germany. It offers a node-based coding mechanic that allows players to construct powerful attacks and put them to the test against waves of threats. Featuring fast-paced gameplay, the survivors-like game pushes players to their strategic limits with each round bringing new challenges. The code must be adapted and the attacks optimised to succeed. Key game features include: Intuitive node-based coding: A drag-and-drop node system that turns complex coding concepts into visual, manageable components. The user-friendly interface allows one to construct and refine powerful algorithms, making the art…
PETER HOSKIN: Dustborn tonal swings between earnestness, comedy and big sci-fi imagineering, and you’ve got a game that’s as raucous as its bright, comic-booky art style. This article was originally published by a www.msn.com . Read the Original article here. .
