India News Live Updates: Railway minister to travel in Kavach-equipped train for efficiency trial in Rajasthan
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will board a Kavach-equipped train on Tuesday afternoon for a trial to assess the efficiency of the automatic train protection system at Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan.
According to railway officials, Vaishnaw will board the Kavach-fitted engine at 4 PM at Sawai Madhopur railway station and travel for 45 minutes to Indargarh Railway station.
“During this 45-minute journey, the train will operate in a Kavach-equipped section at varying speeds to check if it stops automatically at red signals without the loco pilot applying brakes,” an official stated. A group of media personnel will accompany the minister for the trial.
The Kavach system, also known as the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System, was developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). It can automatically apply brakes in emergencies when the train driver fails to respond in time.
The railway ministry has been working on the project for the past eight years to gradually bring the rail network under the Kavach system.
In a recent press briefing, Vaishnaw announced that efforts are underway to operationalize the Kavach system on the 3,000-km Mumbai-Delhi and Delhi-Kolkata rail routes, with completion expected by March next year.
