Offering a breathtaking biodiversity of unique succulents and stunning blooms, the new Richtersveld Desert Botanical Garden is any wildflower lover’s paradise!
Sendelingsdrif, South Africa (02 September 2024) – The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and South African National Parks (SANParks) celebrated a significant milestone on Friday, 20 August – the completion of the Richtersveld Desert Botanical Garden.
The park is South Africa’s first contractual park, and the agreement assigns responsibility for it jointly to SANBI, SANParks and the Richtersveld community.
One of the exciting projects of the management plan was to create a plant nursery at Sendelingsdrif, the park’s main rest camp. This nursery has grown into the stunning Richtersveld Desert Botanical Garden.
The garden showcases a wide variety of plants native to the Richtersveld Desert, a region known for its incredible biodiversity. It’s a living library that helps preserve South Africa’s unique desert plants.
This new garden is part of SANBI’s Garden Expansion Program, which aims to protect more of South Africa’s natural areas.
It’s a big step towards experiencing the wild like never before and SANBI’s goal of having a botanical garden in every province.
