Prince Harry will travel to South Africa next month for another major solo trip without his wife Meghan Markle amid the Duchess of Sussex’s latest media backlash.
The Duke of Sussex is set to visit South Africa in early October in conjunction with the charity Sentebale, which will mark his first visit to the region since “stepping back” from royal duties in 2020.
Founded in 2006, Sentebale was created by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help children and adolescents struggling to come to terms with their HIV status.
According to a source close to the Duke of Sussex, Harry has opted to complete the trip solo because he realised he is better received when travelling without his American-born wife.
“It became very clear, very quickly that Harry still has a considerable fanbase worldwide,” the source told the Daily Express on Saturday.
“More so than Meghan maybe which just goes to show that his royal connection is what’s keeping them afloat.
“There’s been a conscious effort to focus on that love for Harry so in the long-term that adoration can seep through the both of them.”
The announcement comes after Harry completed a week of high-profile solo engagements in New York coinciding with the UN General Assembly High-Level Week.
Among the engagements, the Duke sat on a panel at the Clinton Global Initiative on Tuesday and paid tribute to his late mother Princess Diana.
Harry also squeezed in a more light-hearted appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that saw the Prince screaming expletives while braving a haunted maze alongside the comedian host.
The Duke of Sussex departed New York and flew directly to London on Friday ahead of his appearance at the WellChild awards on Monday.
Harry’s team are understood to have banned the charity from publicising Monday’s event location due to the Duke’s ongoing paranoia about his security in the United Kingdom.
While the Duke of Sussex earned praise in New York, the Duchess is reportedly furious over fresh claims in the Hollywood Reporter that Markle mistreats her Archewell staff.
The highly embarrassing Hollywood Reporter article cited several disgruntled former staffers who likened Meghan to a “dictator in heels” and revealed a culture of fear and indecisiveness inside Archewell.
