SPCA Tshwane and Valley Farm Animal Hospital’s unwavering determination and compassionate spirit resulted in the successful sterilisation of 54 dogs and cats, saving countless lives.
Tshwane, South Africa (02 September 2024) – Every Nelson Mandela Day, SPCA Tshwane works tirelessly to provide affordable sterilisation services to pet owners in need. This year, Valley Farm Animal Hospital’s commitment to animal welfare has been instrumental in strengthening this vital initiative, resulting in increased sterilisations and a more significant positive impact on our community.
Ready to make a difference, a group of the animal hospital’s staff members, including veterinarians, nurses, and support staff, volunteered their time and skills to assist on this remarkable day.
As Murphy’s law would have it, the team quickly discovered that the SPCA clinic had no electricity. But, where there is a will, there is always a way and the team relocated their theatre equipment to rooms with natural light.
“Our first patient was an adorable, joyful, deaf Dalmatian girl full of love and affection. Her sterilisation went smoothly, marking a promising start,” shared Beaulah Zeiler from Valley Farm Animal Hospital.
Things were running smoothly until they weren’t, as the clinic’s generator struggled to power both the lights and heating, leaving our anaesthetised patients cold.
“We moved them outside to warm up in the sun’s healing rays while administering microchips, vaccinations, and dewormers.
“We faced several challenging cases throughout the day, and by late afternoon, we were exhausted but incredibly proud,” Beaulah added.
The drive saw 54 dogs and cats successfully sterilised, preventing countless unplanned litters and potentially saving them from difficult futures.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including equipment failures and adverse weather conditions, the teams remained steadfast in their commitment to providing affordable veterinary care to pet owners in need. Now, that’s dedication worth applauding!
