The future of Destiny remains uncertain, but there are at least some interesting things happening in the “Frontiers” era to come next year. Amidst a bunch of new information, the most significant update was what is happening to legendary armor when Frontiers launches. And it is certainly the most interesting armor is going to be in a decade, probably. At least since the introduction of mods.
A draw here is a rework of stats to make them more streamlined, and offer more interesting concepts like the ability to get double melee or grenade charges if you go over 100 stats in that category. But the most exciting thing is the introduction of set armor, where there will be five pieces in a set with bonuses at 2 and 4 pieces so you can both mix and match and have room for an exotic at all times as well. There are things like a set that heals after kills when you reload at 2 pieces, and then stacking damage on targets with shotguns and fusion rifles at 4 pieces. It’s cool!
And the game is not currently set up for it at all.
No, the problem is not replacing your current armor sets. I cannot subscribe to the idea that it’s bad to finally grind for new armor after literally years of using almost identical sets for a handful of builds. And it’s not like you can’t still use those. Rather, the problem is vault space. It is very much vault space.
The good part about the current system is that since you do not need more than a few sets, there’s essentially zero reason to be storing legendary armor in your vault instead of on your characters. Exotics you’re not using, sure, but not legendary armor.
That is about to change in a drastic way. In order to get “exotic” type effects with these set bonuses, you would need to store at least four pieces of armor, if not five for more flexibility. And that’s with each set. They’ve already previewed four sets in just the intro to this. There will no doubt be more, and more added over time.
Then, you may want diversity within that set build, as you now want to push past 100 stats in various categories. Maybe you can get away with one focus, but if you want more options, that’s going to be even more pieces.
Then, of course, this is on one character in a game where many players are running two or three. So triple everything I just said. You are now storing dozens and dozens of pieces of armor that you previously did not need space for at all.
Bungie has acknowledged this issue but they have not exactly laid out a solution for this, saying the problem is extremely hard.
“We know that Vault pressure is a real problem for many players, even with recent increases in Vault space. Outside of adding more space (an option!), real solutions that enable long term storage of more desirable rolls are really hard problems.
But those are the problems we’re penciling into our roadmap at or around next year’s second Expansion, Codename: Behemoth. We’ll share more details when we have a clearer direction for how we think we can solve this one.”
Can they solve it? I don’t know. The entire collections system has not been good essentially since it launched, and now its best use is “storing” exotic weapons that don’t have random stats or rolls which you can extract wherever. But they have never developed a solution to store weapon or armor rolls. The plans here sound…nebulous at best, but I’m worried this will hamstring the entire armor idea if it is not solved by the time it launches.
I am very much looking forward to trying out new builds with set armor. But I am not looking forward to it if I must cleave through another 100-200 things in my vault after already deleting hundreds before that.
